The Great Tragedy

Posted on 3/30/2017 by Stacy Mal

"Our adversary, the devil prowls the earth seeking the ruin of souls." (1 Peter 5:8-9)

In my humble opinion, one of the greatest tragedies we experience today is not that people no longer believe in God, it's that people no longer believe in the devil. No one wants to talk about the devil anymore. Even now, some of you are cringing while reading this. You're uncomfortable, uneasy, maybe even a little irritated. You think the subject of the devil belongs to fiction books and horror movies... it does not belong to everyday life. But that right there is the tragedy.

The real danger in life is to think that there is none.

What good is it to "believe" God exists, if you freely give your life to His enemy? What good is it to "believe" there is a Heavenly Kingdom if you are content on the road to Hell? What good is it to "believe" a Savior exists if you tie His hands with a refusal to repent?

It's not just a "belief" in God that will save us, friends. Even the devil believes in God. Demons believe in God. It takes much more than that. It takes a belief in the devil, and the firm rejection of his ways. Because when you walk away from darkness you automatically walk into the Light. And once in Light, you begin to see the path...and the One who is calling you forth.

Listen, there are only two sides here. And we must - MUST - choose one. To think you do not have to choose, is to already have chosen. For Jesus said, "Whoever is not with me is against me." (Luke 11:23)

Like it or not, this life is a battlefield. And if you have breath in your lungs still, you are intricately involved in this battle of good versus evil. If you think you are not involved, you have been deceived. There are no bystanders. There is no impartiality. There is no middle ground. The war for souls wages on - every single day, in every place, in every moment, with every word, and every choice.

You cannot skate through life ignoring the combat. If you walk around claiming to be neutral, please know that neutrality is the very battle cry of the enemy. His tactic is not to immediately destroy, but first to disarm. First, he coerces souls to put down their weapon, to quit fighting for God. Because then, he will have one less opponent and that much more strength.

Once you put down your weapon, though - once you put aside the Word of God in Scripture, His holy law in the commandments, his sacraments in the Church - once you disarm yourself from Almighty power, you are easy prey. You are defeated. He will pounce on you like sitting ducks.

Thankfully, we already know the outcome of the war. There is only one Victor in the end. It is the One who evil could not stop, and death could not hold. The One who the storms obey  and seas bow down to. The One who scatters darkness, makes demons tremble, and the earth quake.

And this Mighty One has promised to equip us, to fight for us, to save us. The only thing we have to do is choose our side. You may still be saying "neither side," but understand friends: you empower one side or the other with every single little thing you do or say. To "not choose" is to choose. To be silent is to speak volumes.

Let today be the day you enlist in the army of the King. Let today be the day you commit to Light. I look forward to journeying with you, to supporting you, to crossing the eternal gate with you... and celebrating in the Victor's camp in the end. God bless.
